Defining Moments

Here is an excerpt from my personal statement for acceptance into the Interactive Master's program at Quinnipiac University.

I think Steve Jobs said it best, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works”.  Even as a child, I was always fascinated with how things work.  I would obsessively dismantle pens to view the internal mechanisms and put them back together again.  The marriage between web design and informational cues that create the user interface should be thought of no different than a tangible object such as a pen. One part or component typically makes another one work more effectively.

As I enter the fifteenth year in my career, I reflect on the opportunities and disappointments that have shaped me both professionally and personally.  One such disappointment occurred when I was laid off after only 6 months of employment from my dream job, in San Diego no less, due to poor financial management of the company.  Not only did I relocate my family for the job, but after I was laid off, we moved back to Ohio all within the same year.  Following that ordeal, I told myself that I would be smarter when it came to decisions about my career and the potential effects on my family.

As my career continues to evolve and challenge me in new ways, I have come to realize my true passion in managing the online user experience and site feature enhancements. Developing wireframes, user flow documents, and statements of work have all been a part of my job requirements; however, I feel that I can further enhance my skills with a complimentary interactive media education concentrating on user experience (UX).  Thus, the natural next step for me is to expand my knowledge by completing the Master’s program in Interactive Media. Quinnipiac University is one of few universities that offer such a dedicated program in this field.
